COMMERCIAL & INDUSTRIAL COLD ROOMS
A cold room, also known as walk-in cold storage, is a temperature-controlled space designed to preserve perishable and temperature-sensitive goods by maintaining precise environmental conditions. These facilities are vital across a range of industries, including food retail, pharmaceuticals, medical applications, breweries, chemicals, hospitality, and fishing. In cold chain logistics, cold storage containers are essential for ensuring the quality and safety of temperature-sensitive shipments. The refrigeration system is the cornerstone of a cold room, enabling efficient heat removal while maintaining consistent low temperatures and humidity levels. The design of these facilities requires reliable and energy-efficient components to function effectively. Depending on the type and temperature range of the cold room, both refrigerated and frozen goods can be stored to meet specific storage needs.
Types of Refrigerated Cold Rooms
Positive Temperature Cold Rooms/ Storage Cold Rooms
Storage cold rooms are essentially large refrigerators, designed to maintain temperatures between 0 and 10 ºC and therefore referred to as positive temperature cold rooms. Refrigerated storage rooms are commonly used to store short term perishable goods such as fruits, vegetables, eggs, beverages, flowers and pharmaceuticals.
Negative Temperature Cold Rooms/ Freezer Rooms
Walk in freezer rooms, referred to as negative temperature cold rooms, are designed to store products at subzero temperatures, often as low as -28ºC. Typical products that require frozen storage include food items, fresh foods, ready prepared foods, beverages, vaccines, and organic materials.
Blast Freezers/ Blast Chillers
Walk in blast freezer cold rooms otherwise referred to as shock freezers or blast chillers, can reach temperatures as low as -60 ºC. They are designed to provide rapid freezing to large quantities of temperature sensitive goods such as perishable foods, biological pharmaceuticals, chemicals and laboratory samples. Rapid freezing prevents the contamination of goods and maintains fresh quality for consumer use. They are used within food processing to rapidly cool cooked foods, to speed up packaging and dispatch times.
Rising population and an increase in global online consumers has led to the continuing growth of industries that require the use of cold rooms. An increase in the global trade of perishable and temperature sensitive products across several industries has led to the increasing demand for cold rooms and, on a larger scale, refrigerated warehouses.
